We're building something unusual in the TCG world: your cards get stronger over time.
Most trading card games make older cards obsolete when new sets release. Power creep pushes players to buy the latest expansion. Your old collection gathers dust.
Starfall Catastrophe does the opposite.
The Legacy System
When Book Two: The Quest for I-Ching arrives with its eight new heroes, your Book One cards won't just survive — they'll evolve. Select cards from all six Book One heroes gain a Legacy bonus: an additional effect that only activates when you're facing a Book Two opponent.
Here's how it works: a card like Ember Glow's Searing Slash normally deals 15 damage (or 20 if it's your first Action). But when you play it against a Book Two hero like Léishén or Tiānmìng, it deals an additional 5 damage on top. The card doesn't change — it awakens.
Arkhelios Dragon's Ouroboros — already one of the most powerful allies in the game — gains 8 bonus damage against Book Two heroes. Doctor Boon's Recursive Catalyst draws an extra card. Nyra's Apex of Duality restores 10 additional Shield.
Every Book One hero has Legacy-enabled cards. Every deck gets stronger against the new generation.
Why This Matters for Collectors
Book One cards are being printed now. The Nyra Elemental Flame Deck is live on Kickstarter. Doctor Boon, Virelia, and Sel are in production. Ember Glow and Arkhelios Dragon are next.
Once Book Two launches, these Book One cards become the only way to access Legacy bonuses. They can't be reprinted with the Legacy effects — the effects are tied to the original Book One card identities. Early collectors hold cards that are literally more powerful in cross-book play than anything printed after.
This isn't artificial scarcity. It's a reward for being early. The six heroes who saved the world in The Last Ember carry that history forward — and so do the players who believed in them first.
The Technology Behind It
We've built a new engine for Book Two called the Starfall Effect System (SES) — a JSON-driven card engine where every effect is structured data. One source of truth drives the play engine, the printed card text, the balance simulator, and future translations. No more fragile text parsing. No more edge cases.
The Legacy system is built directly into SES. Each Legacy bonus is a conditional effect: {"if": {"vs_book2": true}}. Clean, testable, and balanced through Monte Carlo simulation across all matchups.
What's Coming
Book Two: The Quest for I-Ching introduces eight new heroes based on the eight trigrams of the I-Ching — Heaven, Earth, Water, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Mountain, and Lake. 320 new cards. Faster, more aggressive mechanics. And a story set three thousand years after The Last Ember, where the shard wakes again and the ancient Book of Changes calls eight new guardians.
But first — Book One is complete. All six heroes. 240 cards. Fully playable right now.
Collect early. Your cards will thank you.
